5 Reasons Why I Don’t Like Opera

By | August 31, 2007

OperaTime for some more critics and as I promised, it’s “5 Reasons Why I Don’t Like Opera”. You can check my “5 Reasons Why I Don’t Like Internet Explorer” here. And here we go…

1. No intergrated spell check. So you accidentally can type with some erors (?).
2. No “smart” auto update.
3. Where’s auto-complete when filling various forms? Few fields is not enough. I wish to have this, even Internet Explorer has that.
4. Can’t remove “Widgets” from menu as well as delete multiple wands. I like clean browser.
5. RSS news placed in the “mail” folder. I was making a backup of all my files but haven’t made that “mail” folder backup as I wasn’t using mail. Seems RSS news items were placed exactly there so I lost all of them.

Tomorrow you will see “5 Reasons Why I Don’t Like Firefox” post.

You may already know that, but :
For the first, you can use userJS :
    http://operawatch.com/news/2007/03/ajax-spell-checker-in-opera.html

For the third, this one :
    http://userjs.org/scripts/browser/enhancements/ops

But the 5 reasons were maybe without any extension…

  2. sid says:

couldnt agree more on 1 2 3. these points are opera weak points for years now. and i bet, they werent fixed in 9.5. people asked for these (esp autoFill) for YEARS. roboForm integration wishes are 4 yo! this is one of the most frequently asked questions about opera – what with autoFill?

looking at past development, i think, that we will get webFonts or something equaly useless, but for things like spellcheck, we’ll have to get used to JS hacks (that work, but well..)

  3. Cqoicebordel,

Yes, I was talking about integrated one.

sid, maybe you are right, only few more days to wait till we know.

  4. kriko says:

    2. No “smart” auto update.
This is arguable. As admin, I don’t like software that craps multiple instances into home folder or any other location on disk, thats why we have software managers (or at least linux does). And I hope opera will not implement such feature ever (at least there should be an option so admin can enable / disable globally).

  5. No smart auto update is also the reason why so many installed Opera versions are outdated.

  6. Werwolf says:

    1. You can easily install spellcheck but you don’t have to.
    2. No need for smart-updates (opera is stable and secure enough) Opera-installer has less than 5 MB.
    3. Autocomplete is enough.
    4. Cleaning widgets could be usefull.
    5. RSS has nothing to do with email, it should be separated. But it is not so important for me.

  7. blah says:

cleaning the widżets menu is pretty easy, but you have to mangle some ini files tho.

  8. Werwolf says:

I have written even about cleaning ini-files. Thats not easy. I don’t know hat to do it manualy. :( Which file will be regenerated, which have I to edit etc. ?

  9. 4 – You can disable the wand feature just like in firefox. Also, you can export your newsfeeds list which I find more useful.

Right now I’m just waiting to see what 9.5 Alpha delivers…

  10. I don’t want to disable wands why you thought so? :-)

I have exported news feeds but it didn’t bring me back news items and won’t bring as some of those blogs died long time ago…

  11. sid says:

xErath, you know perfectly well, that opera’ spellchecking isnt competetive to what is present in ff, it isnt user friendly, it is difficult to install. and people tryign to download it are greeted with a webpage that is 4 or 5 yrs old. it doesnt look convincing, it doesnt look ok.

even userJS version available in forums (and very hard to find if you dont know that it exists) is better than what opera offers.

and deleting entrys in .ini is not cool anymore. we arent in 90’ies

  12. N0zer0 says:

xErath, I use Opera v9.23 and I don’t find file called menu.ini. I use currently userjs method instead.

  13. Brian says:

Autocomplete is a must for me. I do a lot of searches in my work and do not like re-typing the same queries (most of which are just changed a bit).

Werwolf, I’m new to Opera, so don’t quote me on this-but, I think the .ini file for Opera is located in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Opera\Opera\profile\opera6.ini (if that’s what you were talking about)

@ sid: “we arent in 90′ies”
    Time flies. :(
