Download Firefox 20 AlphaIf you like missing out feature(s).

Up until Firefox 19, users were able to stop GIF animations from loading (and looping) with a simple tap of the Esc button.

Now, according to GHacks, the latest nightly build of Firefox 20 (currently tagged as Alpha 1), this feature is no more.

In case you think that Mozilla will “fix this”, it’s by design as the bugzilla ticket has already been resolved with a status “WONTFIX”.

On a positive note, users have already created an extension (SuperStop) specifically for FF20, which brings back this lesser known yet useful feature.

Don’t forget Windows Media Foundation integration (disabled by default) for MP3, M4A/ACC and h.264 content playback and the “network.http.rendering-critical-requests-prioritization” (enabled by default) which allows Firefox to load stylesheets and scripts first with sub-resource loading coming after. Loads as fast as Chrome in many cases.

So many years… and I knew nothing about ESC on the freakin’ animations… or is it Shift+ESC as the bug-page says?

    • apád anyád says:

That is a request for re-implementation. It is simply ESC, for FF>20.

O.K, thanks. I just found out.

Go on Tom’s Hardware homepage, and check how inefficient Firefox is. No other browser is using as much resources ( CPU/GPU ) as Firefox does just by standing and doing nothing. If you press ESC, this madness stops… It’s not a good solution, but it’s something.

They broke a number of things in the Alpha. Sessions no longer get reloaded when you start the browser

But by pressing and holding ESC and clicking the reload button the animated GIFs can be stopped.
