  1. Opera Browser, Iphone Edition » Web Browsers News and Reviews | January 10, 2008
  1. Kelson says:

Let’s see: Safari for iPhone is locked to, well, the iPhone, which doesn’t let you install third-party applications. And Opera Mini (and to an extent Deepfish) is aimed at low-end devices that can’t run a full browser. So I’d say that no, they don’t have anything to worry about.

Opera Mobile, perhaps. Either way, we’re looking at a year or two out, because this initiative is tied to the Mozilla2 overhaul, which means it’ll be either contemporary with or after Firefox 4.

Of course, that also means that the average phone, by the time this comes out, may be able to handle full browsers like Opera Mobile, so things like Deepfish and Opera Mini might be on their way out. It’s hard to say.

  2. kriko says:

@Kelson: The important thing that keeps me on opera is data compression, so I don’t think I’ll be using a “full” browser by that time, unless it will provide high data compression and keep my bills low.

  3. Eddie says:

worry? no…the more browsers the better- less lock in and vendor specifics is better for all mobile users.

That said, let’s not completely forget about Minimo- they already tried once.

  4. Nobody says:

The iPhone can be made to install 3rd party applications. I have lots on mine, and would love to have an alternate browser to choose from. I am looking forward to this.

  5. sad says:

apple is afraid of the competition and therefore, just recently denied opera to offer an alternate browser. iPhone users only option, if, and when available is to jailbreak their iPhone (allow 3rd party apps) and install opera as opera is ready to be installed.

  6. Semi says:

Does anybody know how to get a iphone cracked?????

  7. Zynchro says:

Yeah.. Smash it against some hard rock.. And voilĂ , a cracked iPhone.. b(o_o)d

  8. Kervin says:

But apple blocking other Browsers or having a default pre-installed one, it is not the same as microsoft having ie pre-installed and trying to block other browsers?

You should be open to install any program on you os, isn’t it? How can apple have the right to restrict any third party users!!

They fear competition even more that Microsoft.
