Mozilla to Join EU Suit Against Microsoft
The European Commission (EC) has granted Mozilla, the open-source collaboration behind the Firefox Web browser, the right to join its antitrust case against Microsoft, a spokesman said Monday.
The Commission, Europe’s top antitrust authority, charged Microsoft last month with distorting competition in the market for Web browsers by bundling in its Internet Explorer (IE) browser with the Windows operating system.
If the charges stick, then Microsoft could be forced to change the way it distributes IE, as well as pay a fine for monopoly abuse.

Mozilla Introduces Test Pilot
Today Mozilla has introduced a new project called Test Pilot that will aim to build a representative sample of 1% of the Firefox users. Like it says, it will replace or compliment the tedious and for some users, the confusing feedback forms, so with fewer clicks, they hope it will increase the overall participation.
Here is the abridged overview:
• Develop and promote a formal Test Pilot program with a Firefox add-on at its core.
• The only things asked will be the geographical zone, technical level, locale, etc… and selecting to be anonymous or not.
• It will inform users about new experiments like overview, use cases, etc… and it will download the software if allowed.
• All participants will receive a “flight badge” displayed in their Test Pilot profile and available to embed on blogs, social networks, etc.
• It will gather only the data needed so it won’t slow down the browser nor your network.
Although it has not been launched, you can add or debate Test Pilot at discussion forum.

Browsers are Hot Again
TechCrunch published an interesting article on the recent “Browsers are Hot Again!” panel. Representatives from Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and Opera were invited.
Here is an excerpt from the article on their vision:
An audience question asked each of the panelists to describe the essence of each browser. The responses were varied. Microsoft’s Hachamovitch said his team starts with looking at what the user wants and building from there (and pointed to IE 8’s impressive feature list). Krogh from Opera said they wanted to supply a standards compliant browser for literally any Internet connected device. Google’s Pichal said speed (of javascript) was their primary goal (Hachamovitch then dubbed him “Mr. Speed” in a later comment). Mozilla’s Shaver said Firefox was about “putting the web first,” and creating a standards-compliant browser in as many languages as possible to ensure that no one was left out of the Internet.
P.S. Internet Explorer 8 RC is going to be released within few weeks.
Mozilla Drops Google in Firefox 3.1 and Tries Yandex
It looks like Mozilla is trying some other players as well. As for now, Firefox default search engine for Russian language users will be Yandex instead of everyone’s beloved Google.
According to research studies conducted by TNS, FOM, and Comcon, Yandex is the largest resource and largest search engine in Russian Internet, based on the audience size and internet penetration. Continue Reading
Mozilla’s and Google Relations Gets Complicated
According to Mozilla’s CEO John Lilly, the things between Mozilla and Google became bit more complicated since the launch of Chrome.
“We have a fine and reasonable relationship,” John Lilly, Mozilla’s CEO, said in an interview last week. “But I’d be lying if I said that things weren’t more complicated than they used to be.”
Of course, when Google supplies 88% of the Mozilla’s revenue, word complicated fits here perfectly.
