Dolphin Browser Scores $10 Million Investment
With the release of Dolphin 6.0 HD, a WebKit based mobile web browser for Android devices has also received a $10 million investment from the Sequoia Capital.
Launched 15 months ago, Dolphin Browser has now over 4 million monthly active users and grows at a pace of 30,000 new downloads every day. Not bad for an ad supported web browser.
However, with the $10 million investment, things are about to change as the latest version of such web browser is now ads free and no longer requires users to pay $4.99 for the “premium” version.
According to the company, money will be used for three things:
1. Build the team, which already has around 100 people.
2. Build new partnerships, indicating a possible deal with the handset manufacturers to pre-install Dolphin Browser HD on some of their products.
3. Expand to other platforms, with the iPhone app already in development.
As competition heats up, it’s just a matter of time before some of the vendors start feeling the heat under their seats.

Wow investors really are morons. Does someone want to tell the shareholders that Dolphin is not a web browser, it’s just a skin on the default Webkit browser…
Infact don’t tell them, i’ll fire up my Android SDK tonight and launch my browser on the marketplace to try and lap up fools gold….
Good luck with that. You might learn a thing or two about what a browser actually is :)
Wow, some people are really morons. Why don’t I tell you that Dolphin is truly a web browser, and that WebKit is just a rendering engine from which many browsers can be made…
Anyone is very welcome to go develop and market their own browser. Just try to develop a good one and see if you can lap up any consistent users or investment cash….
The rendering engine is just a piece of a web browser.
Doesn’t sound good for Opera. They need that kind of money.
Why? Opera had in 2009-2010 +/- same revenue as Mozilla (sponsored by Google).
$10M is what Opera had in profits alone in the first quarter of this year. I think Opera is doing just fine.
and id really like to see that man from the screen to show me how to use sticks – this grip goes a long way to hold anything..
btw sequoia capital arent kids, i bet they know what they are doing. and dolphin has one advantage over firefox and opera – its core enginge (webkit) is developed for free by somebody else, so they can concentrate on UI and other stuff. it isnt a bad model at all
