Firefox Ignores Font Family?

By | February 9, 2011

Firefox Ignores Font Family?If you’ve been using Arial Narrow, Arial Black or similar fonts and they are not recognized in Firefox web browser while styling UL LI listings; here are a few ways to fix it:

– If you are not a web developer:
Tools > Options > Advanced > General Tab
Uncheck “Use hardware acceleration when available”
Restart Firefox

– If you are a web developer (assuming you use Arial Narrow):
Include the following lines
font-family: Arial;
font-stretch: condensed;

All set.

Why does this happen? According to Jonathan Kew, the member of bugzilla:

It is probably that “Arial Black” and”Arial Narrow” are not recognized as font families under DirectWrite, but are treated as additional members of the Arial family. To access these faces, use font-family: Arial together with appropriate font-weight and font-stretchproperties.

Assuming that works, this is correct behavior under the DirectWrite font model, which is no longer limited to GDI’s idea of “families”.
