Microsoft Pushes Hard with Internet Explorer 9

By | June 3, 2010

It looks like Microsoft IE team tries to do its best to make you forget about Internet Explorer 6/7 mess.

In the recent update (May 2010 IE Platform Preview), it was announced that Internet Explorer 9 is now fully HTML5 and CSS3 compliant, or that’s what MS wants you to think.

According to test results, IE9 was the only browser to pass all HTML5, SVG 1.1 2nd edition, CSS3 media queries, CSS3 borders & backgrounds, CSS3 selectors, DOM level 3 core, DOM level 3 events and DOM level 2 style tests.

Firefox 3.6.3 managed to score 100% in the DOM level 2 style test as well.

Microsoft Pushes Hard with Internet Explorer 9

Either Microsoft “forgot” to include Google Chrome 5 Final or it was not released by the time browsers were tested.

Comparing Development Release to stable Releases?? (and why Chrome 4.1 and not 5?)
Comparing Browser no features yet, to fully functional stuff
What do features help me if they are slow (they don’t compare speed for the new elements)

–> the comparison is useless.. (at least for me)

    • Crackerflack says:

The comparison is useless because it doesn’t even compare standards compliance.
It only compares MICROSOFT’S tiny bunch of tests, not the actual W3C testsuites.

Microsoft should try testing HTML5 at http://www.html5test.com/ for a true test, not some Microsoft biased selected and twisted data that attempts to make IE seem better than other browsers.

  3. Probably yes, probably those tests are not 100% reliable and made for IE9. But this is amazing anyway. IE definitely want to become a true leader once again, and it seems that no one can stop it.
Its good news for everyone in fact. Isn’t that what we all wanted? IE to become standard-complaint browser?

    • Chris says:

I think you’re missing the point a little. The problem here is that MS hand picked a few tests that IE9 passes. They’re making it LOOK like they are leading in HTML5 and CSS3 compliance, but the truth is that they are leagues behind their competitors.
If IE were to become truly standards compliant, that would be awesome news indeed.

  4. Tiago Sá says:

This is awesome news. Even if it’s totally faked, like Chrome’s speed adverts, but it’s a good indicator of what they’re trying to do with their browser. It’s awesome news! If IE9 were to be released next year, in 2015 the vast majority of the world’s population would be using a proper browser (even if it sucked). Fantastic news!

    Aaaaand, Mozilla scores again! :D

  5. Crackerflack says:

Tell me you are joking, Vygantas.
These tests do NOT show full HTML/CSS compliance at all. It shows Microsoft’s own and unverified tests!
The actual test suites for these contain HUNDREDS of tests.
Again, Microsoft’s page only show the tests Microsoft created to make IE look good. It does not show overall standards compliance

    What Crackerflack said.
Vygantas if you want FavBrowser.com to be taken seriously as a web browser blog you will edit this blog post NOW to remove the “fully HTML5 and CSS3 compliant” comment. This is EXACTLY what Microsoft wants people to assume even though it’s a complete lie.
If html5test.com isn’t enough evidence see the HTML5/CSS3 categories on caniuse.com . Even with IE9 they are still FAR BEHIND other browsers in their support.
You clearly know or care little of actual web standards support to not have known about this ages ago.

  7. Nevenall says:

People, the blog post you are bitching about is saying, in effect, here are some NEW html 5 tests that we developed and submitted to W3C and here is how the current browsers fair on those NEW tests.
Did any of you actually read the article before you started ranting?

    • Nevenall says:

I should amend that. The original poster’s claim was that this was somehow an announcement of full compatibility. Which it obviously is not.

    • nvm says:

The blog post is intentionally misleading. No one bothers to read the fine print, and the Microsoft guys know that. Even Vygantas missed it. They have also been made aware of this, so the fact that they haven’t fixed the page to make it more obvious what the tables show is evidence that they are doing it on purpose.

      • nvm says:

Sorry, not blog post. I was referring to Microsoft’s intentionally misleading page.

      • Nevenall says:

“This website contains several collections of new test pages that we developed in conjunction with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) working groups. These 192 test pages have been updated based on feedback and now include some new HTML5 test pages.”
This is misleading how exactly? Misleading like taking a table of results out of context and claiming that they constitute a public announcement when they don’t.

        • nvm says:

It’s misleading because people don’t bother to read the fine print, and Vygantas is proof that people are being misled. And Microsoft knows this.
